Hi, and welcome to my book journal. Here you can find info on all the books I've read, kinda like mini book reports. Yes, I'm that dorky. I love reading and will read almost anything I can get my hands on. I'm mostly into horror and mystery, but will give almost anything a chance if it sounds like it might be good. My favorite author of all time is Stephen King, followed by Dean Koontz. Feel free to suggest books to me here as well, I'm always looking for something new:) You can learn more about me at my regular journal hardcasecrime.

She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I can really relate to the main character, which makes it even better. A young girl gets raped, and to quiet her guilt, her mother indulges her with food. No matter how I explain this book, its not going to do it justice. I'll just make it sound stupid. So I'll just say my favorite part was when Dolores was in the mental hospital. I can relate most to that part of the book.

The Ignored by Bentley Little
I didn't like this book at the beginning, but the middle was good. The end wasn't bad, but defintely not what I was expecting. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not. It was defintely an interesting concept that some people are seen, while others fade into the background. Very thought provoking though. I'd read it again just for that.

Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
An ex-con's daughter is brutally murdered and his childhood friend is the homicide detective in charge of the case. This was such a good book! I didn't know who did it until the very end. I could relate to this book so much it was scary at times. The raw emotions. Love, anger, fear. All very real. I'll defintely be reading other stuff from this guy soon.

The cat who saw red by Lilan Jackson Braun
Following the same basic story line of every one of these books, Koko and YumYum, the siamese cats, solve a mystery and save Qwilleran's life. The mysteries aren't even hard to figure out anymore.

Darkness, Tell us by Richard Laymon
This was a really good chessey horror book. I was pretty pleased. 6 kids go into the mountains to find a ghosts treasure after playing with a Ouija board at their teachers house. Some pretty unexpected things happen. This guy is a good author. And its also a pretty fast read.

City of the Dead by Brian Keene
This is the sequel to Rising, and it picks up right where the first book ends. This is also a really good book, and in it you learn its not a basic ohmygod-zombies-are-here-to-eat-our-brai ns type of story. Same characters, with a few new ones added in. The end of this one is really unexpected too. Maybe there will be a 3rd? I'm hoping so. I love when books give you what you dont expect. Very satisfied with this one:)

Darkfall by Stephen Laws
It started out ok, but turned to semi-crap in the middle/near the end. A storm blows up around Christmas and a building full of partiers goes missing. Turns out the reason for it all was scientifically related to electricity. Why can't it just be a damn horror novel??? The very end wasn't bad though.

Shivers III edited by Richard Chizmar
All in all, this was a pretty good book. It has stories from a lot of todays top horror writers, including Brian Keene, who is the reason I checked this book out of the library in the first place. Some of the stories actually got me a little creeped out, which is awesome! In the first story, a girl with a scarred face plays a horrible joke on a would-be boyfriend. In another a jazz musician is taken over and drained by a trumpet. In yet others boys find themselves in a weird bootcamp, two circus midgets fall in love and must fight their way free from an evil man, giant spiders take over the world, dog really IS man's best friend when it comes to confronting demons, a man fights attacking hedges, a man becomes obsessed with the hospital his mother dies in, famous dead people come back to take over the world, dead children get revenge on a careless man, a set of parents sell their souls for their child, shadows become real, a gang of boys turn an unsuspecting kid into one of them, a man gets off the subway and ends up in a world that he doesn't know, a jealous woman puts a stop to her boyfriends cheating by locking him up, angry ghosts possess a man, a hole in a backyard starts eatting animals, and a man is locked in a house with the ghosts of the wife and daughter he murdered. My favorite was defintely the one about the dead celebrities coming back. Of course, Elvis was the King of them all:)

In this one Jim Qwilleran is moved on the newspaper to do Gradious Adobes. He interviews people about their homes and Odd Bunsen, the photographer, goes along and shoots pictures. Some guys jade collection is stolen, and yada yada yada. Thank you and Goodnight.

Rising by Brian Keene
Finally in the double digits! Anyway, this was a really good book. Maybe just because I'm a cheesey zombie novel nerd, but I like to think its because its really good. The author isn't afraid to kill off "main" characters, which I like. And the end is a HUGE cliff hanger. Through the book you meet quite a few different people, and end up getting attached to a couple. As far as the story goes, its your basic end-of-the-world-zombies-are-taking-over type book. But a good one:)

The Cat's Pajamas by Ray Bradbury
I haven't read anything by Ray Bradbury that wasn't different and interesting. This is no different, and is a collection of his stories. In one story, a black boy wants to be white and meets a white boy who wants to be tan. In another a family gets gunned down by a killer, where in yet another is a story about a couple in a bed and breakfast and all the woman does is cry. There is a strange twist at the end of that one, and leaves you contimplating for a while. The Congressmen of The United States gamble away the country, a black woman gets shunned by a white boy she spent her life taking care of, a graffitti artist falls to his death, newlyweds buy a huge old house, two men visit Abraham Lincoln's death train filled with ghosts, a hemophiliac gets murdered in a very interesting way, two people meet and spend the night together because of a stray cat, a woman in love finds out the man she adores loves her sister, a man builds a cement mixing time machine, three little girls share a ghostly experience, a man leaves his wife over trips to Paris, a mob of men tattoo a horrible racist, a man finds dead bodies from the past, humans visit a race of friendly giant spiders, a group of friends sing the night away, a man gives up living because all of his enemies are dead, a man brags about his wealth to a couple on a cruise ship then asks them a question they could never answer, and its all ended with a wonderful poem about a select few dead authors. Not wonderful, but worth a read. The poem is one of the best.

The Cat who could read backwards by Lilian Jackson Braun
This is the first book in the many title series The Cat Who...mystery books. In this book you first meet the main character for the series, Qwilleran, who becomes Art Critic at a newspaper, The Daily Fluxion. You also meet the head Art Critic, Mountclemins, and his Siamese cat Koko. Together they solve a artistic related murder. Not the best book I've read, but hey, its about cats. Who doesn't like books about cats?

Trans-Sister Radio by Chris Bohjalian
I LOVED this book! It's about a man, Dana, that meets and falls in love with a teacher, Allison. He soon tells Allison that ever since he was little, he knew he was different then other men, and that he plans on getting a sex change operation. He does, and him and Allie give it a shot to see if it works out. Everyone is against Dana, especially Allison's ex-husband Will. People pull thier kids out of Allison's class, and the town's people sign a petition to get Allison fired for dating Dana. I really enjoyed the end of this book, very touching:)

The Darkening by Yvonne Navarro - Wicked Willow 1 -
This is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer novel. Yes, I'm THAT dorky. Anyway, this is the beginning of what would have happened if Willow never stopped doing the bad mojo. In this book she creates a big blue cat demon thingy to steal evil power for her. But she saves it from killing Buffy and does kill Xander,Anya, and Dawn because the ghost of Tara is her "good side" now. It was pretty good. Always gotta love a Buffy book!

I'm all for "true" ghost stories, but for some reason I just could NOT get through this book. Some of the tales were good, but it wasn't really that great. Enough said I do believe.

Chill Factor by Sandra Brown
I fucking LOVE this book! At first I didn't have very good expectations for it, but if I ever met the lady, I'd have to give her an apology. I thought I would have the end figured out by the middle of the book, but thankfully I was wrong. The end holds LOTS of suprises in store. This is one of the best books I've read in a really long time. A woman is trapped in a cabin in a blizzard with who police believe to be a serial killer. To make matters worse, the woman is the local cop's ex-wife. Kinda non original at that point, but I dont want to spoil it for anyone who might read it. The only bad thing about it is I'm not sure of its repeated readability so I'm glad I checked it out of the library. All in all, one damn good book.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur GoldenI've never been a big fan of Japanese/Chinese culture, but this has been on my to-read list for a while, so I figured I'd give it a shot. It took me a while to get through this book, seeing as most of the time reading it I would have found prying out my eyes with a rusty spoon more enjoyable. The only saving grace this book has it I found it interesting to learn how young women, especially Geisha, acted and were treated.
